Kiezofen & CARLA - How a mobile wood-fired oven creates sustainable encounters
The story
Falk has been involved with social change and sustainable coexistence for many years. At some point, he realized:
Change often does not start with institutions or other people - but with oneself. This realization gave rise to the desire to bring people from different walks of life together and engage them in conversation in public spaces.
The "Kiezofen" project was born: a mobile wood-fired oven on the CARLA.
Together with other people, Falk bakes bread, pizza and much more in the middle of the neighborhood - just like in the old days at the village oven, only mobile and completely without a car. As the oven heats up, encounters are created between people who open up to each other.
The Kiezoofen is therefore much more than just a mobile oven:
It is a social meeting place on wheels.
The challenge
A brick wood-fired oven is extremely heavy. Even after a few optimizations, the oven and accessories weigh around 140 kilograms.
For many transports of this size, a car or van would be a matter of course. But that is exactly what Falk wanted to avoid. From the outset, his aim was to transport the mobile oven exclusively by bicycle - sustainably, emission-free and suitable for everyday use.
The biggest challenge was to find a trailer for heavy loads that could
can safely transport heavy weights,
is suitable for daily use,
brakes reliably,
drives stably
and remains flexible even in urban areas.
The solution
With the CARLA, Falk found exactly the right solution for his idea. The CARLA maxi transports the oven, which weighs around 140 kilograms, safely and reliably by bicycle.
Together with a locksmith, Falk developed a special steel frame with gas lift dampers: low and stable while riding, comfortable at working height when baking.
Today, Falk travels all over the district with his Kiezofen and the CARLA - usually even on a normal bicycle. An e-bike is only used occasionally for longer distances.
The CARLA not only enables Falk to transport heavy loads, but also to implement an entire idea: bringing people together, revitalizing public spaces and demonstrating that sustainable transport works without any problems, even with 140 kilograms.
