Alexander Glaser - Landscape Conservation Without a Van

The story

Alexander Glaser is a specialist in ecological environmental protection and landscape conservation, a father of three boys, and a passionate cargo bike rider. In addition to his commitment to nature conservation and his work at a bicycle repair shop, he runs a small business providing landscape conservation and green space maintenance services.

His daily work includes everything involved in maintaining company grounds or private properties: trimming hedges, mowing lawns, planting, and collecting trash.

Alexander takes an unusual approach: he consistently handles his jobs using a cargo bike and trailer—without a van.

For him, this is not just a practical solution, but also a conscious choice. He wants to keep his business manageable so that he has enough time for family, volunteer work, and the things that matter to him. At the same time, he wants to show that professional landscaping and sustainable mobility go hand in hand.

The challenge

People like Alexander who work in landscape maintenance transport heavy and bulky equipment every day. Lawn mowers, brush cutters, tillers, shovels, rakes, and large garden bags are standard equipment.

For many businesses, this automatically means: a utility vehicle, ongoing costs, and a lot of space.

Alexander wanted to take a different approach. He was looking for a sturdy cargo trailer for commercial use that would allow him to reliably transport tools, machinery, and yard waste—without having to rely on a car and the associated costs.

The solution had to meet several requirements:

  • high payload capacity for professional equipment,

  • easy loading and unloading without tipping

  • maximum reliability in daily use,

  • low operating costs for efficient cost-effectiveness

At the Eurobike 2024 trade show, Alexander was able to thoroughly test the CARLA. After a test drive, the decision to go with a CARLA maxi was made.

The solution

With the CARLA maxi and the ramp, Alexander has found exactly the right solution for his daily work and his values.

Pulled by his Butchers & Bicycles MK1, he now transports everything needed for professional landscaping every day—from lawn mowers and brush cutters to tillers, shovels, rakes, and heavy garden bags.

The CARLA supports him in several ways:

  • Direct loading and unloading: Thanks to the low loading surface, Alexander can drive right up to machines, tools, or garden bags and load them easily—with or without the ramp.

  • Practical handcart function: While working, the CARLA itself becomes a tool and can be moved flexibly across the terrain.

  • Robust and low-maintenance: The simple design allows for many repairs to be done by the user and ensures maximum reliability in daily use.

  • High payload: The CARLA Maxi offers enough space and load capacity for professional landscaping equipment and larger quantities of garden waste.

  • Advertising included: The cargo bike rig stands out, sticks in people’s minds, and provides advertising at no extra cost or effort.

The best part for him: “The conversations that arise when people ask me about my cargo bike rig. They often don’t realize that you can do daily work without a van and that it doesn’t even require a major change. I’m much more flexible on the bike and can react to potential road closures much more easily than with a normal, bulky van.”

For Alexander, CARLA therefore transports not only tools and materials—but also the feeling of doing something good for the environment and helping to change people’s mindsets.

“The greatest advantage of the CARLA is that it allows me to show that you don’t always need a van to run a business. In everyday work, you can get along perfectly well without a combustion-engine vehicle. With the CARLA, I can do almost everything the companies around me do. The difference is that I look a lot better doing it — and people remember me far more than the tenth van driving down the street.”
